Welcome to September, dearest readers,
I am here with an unpopular hot take: SEPTEMBER IS A SUMMER MONTH. Fall doesn’t officially start until the 22nd, meaning most of the month is Summer.
And yet we all feel change in the air… it’s not the season. It’s US.
We all feel a shift. School is starting, we see the end of the year in sight, we’re evaluating shifts in behavior.
This is us, not Mother Nature. She’s still cranking out heat and sunshine.
How do we calibrate to this pressure change?
Some of us need a jolt of structure to recalibrate. But others may need to go slowly.
For our family, starting this week, we stop traveling. We get a morning rhythm in order. But I still plan to hit the beach. I still plan to slap on the sunscreen and embrace summer time joy.
This is a short post today, because I am adjusting back to work hours. I have so many projects cooking that I hope bring stability to my family, elevate voices that matter to me, and ultimately align my work with my mission to save lives and help folks thrive despite challenges.
So, as we all start changing our routines, my message: go easy on yourselves if the adjustments aren’t all simple.
It’s a lot of pressure - and a lot of scurrying around. Not to mention, buckling down.
Breathe. Find moments to slow down and tune into stillness and joy.
You can take your iced pumpkin latte and a beach chair to the park when it’s 80 degrees still.
Comment of the Week
“Enjoy every moment, enjoy every mountain on your August vacation. I relistened to “BE” and watched the slideshow again. I got goosebumps! So beautiful and sad too: I got tears in my eyes thinking about what you all went through and smiled at where you are now. Though the road somewhat challenging, you are soaring free now and heading into clearer skies and pastures.
Thank you for taking me and all of us on Substack on your journey. .🙏💜” Susan

I started writing this when I was on dialysis. It’s intended to be both memoir and a practical tool to help folks who might be going through something similar or those caregivers and family supporting someone with a challenging diagnosis. NOTE: This is not intended to replace actual medical guidance. Please consult your doctors on your individual challenges and situations. Please talk to your clinicians before adjusting any of your care protocols. Also names have been changed for most of my medical staff.
Thank you to CC Couchois, Roy Lenn, and Dr. Richard Burwick for your founding level donation.
Happy Summer into Fall! Happy pumpkin lattes. I just had one at Starbucks this weekend. It was delicious.
