The Power of Chalk Butterflies 🦋
A family art project to spread love after an incident of antisemitism makes the news
Morning Substack readers,
It seems my “brand” is making lemons into lemonade.
We accidentally made the news here in LA. After walking home from the farmers market, I was appalled and disturbed to see many swastikas scrawled with marker on sidewalks and businesses for several blocks.
I reported it all to police, but a day later they were still there. While July was coloring with Zach on the driveway, I got the idea to go out and take the matter into our own hands.
As a family, we hit the street and colored over the markings with flowers, hearts, butterflies (all symbols July understands fluently), and messages of love.
Here’s a video showing our efforts:
Someone told me hate acts are up 300% but maybe we can combat hate with love. Let’s lift love acts up 400%!
Every time we see an act of hate, let’s all do something with love to help someone or a community.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. But it’s important to remind the world, love is stronger.
We all have the power to change the story into something more beautiful.
If I’m going to keep pushing to live in this world, our family is dedicated to help make it a better place.

HOLY COW! Hi Readers- I wrote an article in the Huffington Post - it’s my first byline - and then it went viral. I’m just so floored and proud. It’s still number one as I type after eleven hours!? (Ahead of Brad, Angelina, and the NFL???) I often say that after being so near to death so many times, I was sent back to life on a mission to help advocate for…

I started writing this when I was on dialysis. It’s intended to be both memoir and a practical tool to help folks who might be going through something similar or those caregivers and family supporting someone with a challenging diagnosis. NOTE: This is not intended to replace actual medical guidance. Please consult your doctors on your individual challenges and situations. Please talk to your clinicians before adjusting any of your care protocols. Also names have been changed for most of my medical staff.
Thank you to Roy Lenn and Dr. Richard Burwick for your founding level donation.
Thank you for showing us all that an act of kindness and goodwill is merely a choice we can all make. I certainly want to see acts of kindness going up by 400%!!
