I love when smart people fight the system!
Dearest Lovely RDG Readers,
You may have read my recent article on fighting insurance denials:
Well, this week I was introduced to a tool that helps you do JUST THAT with a powerful tagline, “Make your insurance company cry too.”
Sorry this only applies to the US patients right now- but hope it can inspire others!
FIGHTING INSURANCE DENIALS WITH AI
We have a new American Canadian-born hero.
As AI usage in denials is increasing, I love how Holden Karau is holding the line.
According to her bio, Karau is a “Canadian-born trans-woman living in America who's been working in tech for more than a decade. She's experienced the "joys" of American health insurance and helps her friends & loved ones navigate the seemingly random maze of disappointment and sadness. Her dislike of health insurance companies treating her loved ones unfairly led her to create Fight Health Insurance and now Fight Paperwork.”
Free for patients, this tool actively helps you project manage your denials by drafting your appeal with AI.
There’s even a section for providers too (because we know what a time suck this all is)! https://www.fightpaperwork.com
Docs, I watched the demo and it’s very straight forward. Check it out!
This piece in Fast Company says “in plans purchased through Healthcare.gov in 2021, for example, less than 1% of patients appealed their denied claims.” But with a tool like this, helping folks know where to start - they have a shot at getting the care they need and deserve - and pay insurance for in the first place.
Insurance giants hire intermediary companies to handle their prior authorizations and denials like EviCore - or as I like to call them EVILCore. They can just dial up and down the amount of denials they need to send out as part of general company budgetary goals according to an article in Pro-Publica which is shockingly disturbing to me.
So why can’t we all fight back a bit more with tools like Karau’s?
Now any patient in the US can generate an appeal with Fight Health Insurance by inserting some basic information and uploading a claim denial letter. Within minutes you can get the process rolling.
In Business Insider, Karau said that she plans to keep the platform free for patients, “aside from the $5 optional cost to have the company fax out an appeal.”
Karau shared with Business Insider about the success stories people have shared with them, “just the other day she was talking to someone whose back surgery was successfully appealed using Fight Health Insurance.”
I love a success story! If you try it out, let me know how it goes!

I started writing this when I was on dialysis. It’s intended to be both memoir and a practical tool to help folks who might be going through something similar or those caregivers and family supporting someone with a challenging diagnosis. NOTE: This is not intended to replace actual medical guidance. Please consult your doctors on your individual challenges and situations. Please talk to your clinicians before adjusting any of your care protocols. Also names have been changed for most of my medical staff.
