Hi Readers, I hope today turns out to be lucky for you! I feel lucky you’re here.
I was obsessed as a child with folklore around Leprechauns. My Irish grandmother helped feed this wonder about magic in the world. These creatures, once captured, would give you three wishes.
I set traps for them and scoured grass for four leaf clovers.
I found a four-leaf clover once when I was in the 3rd grade at school. My mom laminated it and made it into a book mark.
I saved that book mark for three and a half decades… until I left it in a book on a plane in January.
Luck sure is fickle.
I often call myself the luckiest unlucky person I know.
As I think back on the last few St Patrick’s days- I see this to be true.
Three years ago, I was just out of the hospital. I got an infusion on St. Patrick’s day.
Yes, I have a terrible disease that knocked me to the brink to existence… but it’s one of the few rare diseases with a treatment.
Oh luck, I see what you did there… you are ever-tricky!
Today, I’m reflecting on my luck and luck itself. The world and universe can be incredibly unfair. Bad luck happens to so many of us without a care to how good or deserving we are. It’s a devastating truth.
Despite that, we are also incredibly powerful generators of luck for ourselves and others.
All these things are true at once.
We have power and agency to make change, set ourselves up for success, and improve our outcomes.
We can’t control everything. That’s a fact we must surrender to. But the truth of luck doesn’t end there. If we see the world as chaos, we don’t give ourselves enough credit.
How do I know this? Because you can, in this moment, create good fortune for someone else.
Today, we can be good luck for someone else we feel is deserving in the form of support. Maybe it looks like an invitation or words of encouragement or a recommendation.
Around me, I have an abundance of inspiring good luck generators in my life. Friends and family who have lended me and my family a hand in the grimmest of moments or in the depths of uncertainty and anxiety.
I try to pay it forward as well.
Like last week, I nominated a favorite hard-working nurse for an award at the hospital. I have power to remind her and her workplace she is wonderful and deserves good things. It can be that simple.
So I put a little gold clover over my port scar to remind me- luck is all around… even in the darkest places. 🍀

In the orbit of a miracle
·Postpartum life is complicated, but we get some Irish luck. A day-off of dialysis, but a full day of labs, my ob-gyn, and my infusion. Zach and the baby joined me dressed in green, because it is St. Patrick’s day.

Welcome to my disease. What is atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS) or Complement-Mediated Thrombotic Microangiopathy (CM-TMA)?
Hi, If you’re new here, I started writing a book six months ago when I was on dialysis. It’s intended to be both memoir and a practical tool to help folks who might be going through something similar or those caregivers and family supporting someone with a challenging diagnosis. I hope to include excerpts here as I write. NOTE: This is not intended to r…
I started writing this when I was on dialysis. It’s intended to be both memoir and a practical tool to help folks who might be going through something similar or those caregivers and family supporting someone with a challenging diagnosis. NOTE: This is not intended to replace actual medical guidance. Please consult your doctors on your individual challenges and situations. Please talk to your clinicians before adjusting any of your care protocols. Also names have been changed for most of my medical staff.
Thank you new paid subscriber Tim R.! I’m honored by your support.

Loving this message! ❤️ 🍀
Your messages are so beautiful, they make me tear up. I love that your mom made that into a bookmark! My kids are SO into St. Patrick's day this year, they made little traps and I just had to get them some little things the 'leprechaun' left behind. Hopefully they'll remember it later in life. If not, mom has a million pictures lol. I have a small clover tattoo, it was initially given to me free by a friend who had opened a tattoo shop, not the best move lol, and while it was originally for my beloved dog, Clover, now I call it my good luck charm!
